The Agilent N6700 Low-Profile Modular Power System (MPS) is a 1U-high, multiple-output programmable DC power supply system that gives test system integrators the flexibility to mix and match from over 30 different DC power and electronic load modules. The result is a 1- to 4-channel DC power system that can be optimized to match a specific set of test requirements, letting engineers invest in high-performance outputs where speed and accuracy matter and basic outputs where simple DC power is all that is needed. The system is built on an advanced switching power supply design that fits a multiple-output system within a single 1U of rack space.
The N6700 MPS is built for automatic test equipment (ATE) systems in R&D, design validation, and manufacturing. Power supplies are a fundamental component of test systems across aerospace and defense, consumer electronics, computers and peripherals, communications, semiconductor, and automotive electronics — industries where complex ATE systems often require multiple power sources and where reducing occupied rack space and increasing test throughput are constant pressures. Within the family, precision modules are suited to semiconductor and passive device testing where a precisely controlled output and highly accurate measurements are needed, while the source/measure unit modules support applications such as battery drain analysis, battery-life optimization, and functional test.
ValueTronics stocks and holds its own test-and-measurement inventory in a 20,000-square-foot secure warehouse at 1675 Cambridge Drive in Elgin, Illinois. Every pre-owned unit is inspected and functionally verified in-house before it ships, while new units ship factory-sealed exactly as received from the manufacturer. Keeping inventory on hand and verifying used units in our own facility means an order can be filled quickly and with confidence in the unit's condition.
These instruments are branded Agilent Technologies. Agilent Technologies was formed in 1999 as a spin-off of Hewlett-Packard's test and measurement business; that electronic measurement business was subsequently established as Keysight Technologies in 2014. Equipment bearing the Agilent name is part of that continuous corporate lineage.
The N6700 Modular Power System is a single platform built around three low-profile 1U mainframes — the 400 W N6700B, the 600 W N6701A, and the 1200 W N6702A — each able to hold one to four DC power modules. Rather than a fixed-configuration supply, it is a user-reconfigurable system: integrators select from over 30 modules to assemble exactly the channel count, voltage, current, and performance grade a test station calls for, and modules can be swapped or added as test needs change. The system can be purchased as a mainframe plus separate modules for self-assembly, or as a build-to-order N6710B, N6711A, or N6712A system shipped fully assembled.
The same modules also run in the N6705 DC Power Analyzer, a four-slot bench mainframe that brings the platform to the R&D bench (see the dedicated section below). Because the bench analyzer and the low-profile ATE mainframes share the same module catalog, results can be correlated and programs shared between R&D and manufacturing. A power module's available capabilities depend not only on its own hardware but also on the hardware and firmware of the mainframe in which it is installed; modules installed in an N6705 DC Power Analyzer additionally gain front-panel scope view, arbitrary waveform generation, and data logging.
The modules themselves fall into distinct series: basic DC power modules (the N6730, N6740, and N6770 ranges), high-performance autoranging modules (N6750 series), precision modules (N6760 series), source/measure units (N6780 series), application-specific modules (N6783A), and electronic loads (N6790 series). A single mainframe can combine a high-power autoranging output with several economical basic outputs.
Each pre-owned model below is its own dedicated product page with condition-matched pricing. Select the mainframe or module that matches your channel count, output rating, and interface needs, and review that page for its specific specifications and pre-owned availability.
The mainframes differ chiefly in total available output power — 400 W, 600 W, and 1200 W for the N6700B, N6701A, and N6702A respectively. Only the N6702A offers automatic AC-line power scaling: it senses the available AC line power at turn-on and limits output to 600 W on a standard outlet, so the high-power frame can be plugged into any standard outlet and draws full power only when operated at the higher AC input. Output sequencing can be synchronized across multiple units by wiring the rear-panel I/O ports together — a capability supported on the N6700B, N6701A, and N6702A mainframes.
Among the modules, the differences are output rating (from 18 W up to 500 W), voltage and current range (0–5 V up to 0–150 V, and up to 50 A), ripple and noise, and programming and measurement accuracy, along with which series each belongs to. Basic modules provide clean, economical DC power; high-performance autoranging and precision modules add autoranging output that delivers full power across a range of voltage and current combinations, lower noise, and faster voltage changes, with the precision series adding dual programming and measurement ranges (16-bit programming, 18-bit measurement) for milliampere and microampere work and simultaneous voltage-and-current digitizing. The N6780 source/measure units add two- and four-quadrant operation and highly accurate measurements down to nanoamperes, and the N6790 electronic loads offer 100 W and 200 W modules with constant-voltage, constant-current, constant-resistance, and constant-power modes. The 300 W and 500 W autoranging and precision modules each occupy two of the four module slots; all other modules occupy one slot. The comparison table below lays out the headline mainframe ratings.

The N6730 50 W series is shown above. Full per-model performance specifications for the other families — N6740 (100 W) and N6770 (300 W) basic modules, N6750 high-performance autoranging modules, N6760 precision modules, N6780 source/measure units, N6783A application-specific modules, and N6790 electronic loads — are listed on each model's own dedicated product page. For the precision, SMU, and application-specific modules, published values apply to the highest output/measurement range, as those modules have multiple ranges.
These DC power modules also install in the Agilent N6705 DC Power Analyzer, a modular instrument that sources and measures DC voltage and current into a device under test. The N6705 combines one to four DC power supply (or, on later mainframes, electronic load) modules with the functions of a digital multimeter, oscilloscope, arbitrary waveform generator, and data logger in a single integrated unit. Agilent positions it as an entirely new instrument category for R&D engineers, giving insight into a device's power consumption without writing a single line of code, since all sourcing and measuring functions are available directly from the front panel. It mounts in a standard 19-inch rack as a 4U instrument.
Engineers use it to set up and view turn-on and turn-off sequences, measure and display voltage and current versus time to visualize power into the device under test, control DC bias ramp-up and ramp-down rates, generate DC bias transients and disturbances, and log data over seconds, minutes, hours, or even days to capture current and power consumption or anomalies. A common task is inrush current measurement: triggering the integrated oscilloscope on the DC output's on/off key in single-shot mode captures the current flowing into the DUT as the output turns on. While designed primarily as an R&D bench tool, it is fully programmable and LXI Class C certified, which makes it useful in ATE systems for visualizing results as tests execute, for device troubleshooting, and for test development.
The N6705B/N6705C is the four-slot mainframe ordered together with separately boxed modules that you assemble yourself; the N6715B/N6715C is the build-to-order configuration shipped as one mainframe with one to four installed modules. Both provide 600 W of total available power and full front-panel operation of the integrated DMM, oscilloscope, arbitrary waveform generator, and data logger. The mainframe further provides front-panel binding posts rated 20 A per post, 4 gigabytes of internal non-volatile storage, a built-in real-time clock, and power management that allocates mainframe power to the outputs that need it. The N6705B rear panel provides access ports to route high-current wiring for modules rated above 20 A.

Recommended pairing: the Agilent 14585A Control and Analysis Software controls up to four N6705 mainframes — up to 16 power modules simultaneously — from a single PC, adding enhanced data visualization and management.
Important: DC power and electronic load modules are not standalone instruments and require an N6700B/N6701A/N6702A (or N6700C/N6701C/N6702C) mainframe, or an N6705 DC Power Analyzer (N6705A/N6705B/N6705C) mainframe, sold separately, to operate. A module's basic capabilities depend not only on its own hardware but also on the hardware and firmware of the mainframe in which it is installed.
Important: Output terminal isolation: no output terminal may be more than ±240 VDC from any other terminal or chassis ground. When using the auxiliary measurement input terminals on the N6781A, no output or input terminal may be more than ±60 VDC from any other terminal and chassis ground.
Important: Maximum series operation is 240 V; maximum rated parallel operation is 100 A per N6705 mainframe.
Important: Output current is derated 1% per °C above 40 °C ambient temperature.
Important: Installing a 500 W module in the N6700B 400 W mainframe may prevent that module from running at its full rated output power.
Important: Each module occupies one module slot, except the N6753A–N6756A, N6763A–N6766A, N6785A–N6786A, and N6792A modules, which each occupy two of the four mainframe slots. The N6753A and N6754A 300 W high-performance autoranging modules in particular each occupy two slots.
Important: The mainframe's total available output power is 600 W (N6705). If the sum of the installed module power exceeds the available output power, the mainframe's power management feature allocates available power to the outputs where it is needed.
Important: For modules with outputs rated greater than 20 A (such as the N6753A or N6792A), high-current wires must be routed through the N6705's rear panel; the N6705B mainframe provides rear-panel access ports for this (for an N6705A mainframe, order N6705U-057 to replace the rear panel). Front-panel binding posts are rated for 20 A per post.
Important: For proper operation, you must fill any empty module slots with filler panels. When configuring a mainframe with fewer than four filled module slots, you must order a filler panel kit (N6708A); each kit contains three filler panels.
Important: Rack mounting requires the rack mount kit (option 908 / N6709A); standard rack mount hardware, rails, or slides are not compatible with the N6700 because of its 1U size and airflow requirements.
Important: For the N6702A 1200 W mainframe (and the N6712A build-to-order system), maximum output power is limited to 600 W at 100–120 VAC; to achieve full 1200 W output you must use option 929 and operate at 200–240 VAC. When the N6702A is first turned on it senses the available AC line power and limits output power to 600 W so the high-power mainframe can be plugged into any standard outlet. AC mains circuits rated at 100–180 VAC cannot supply enough current to power the N6702A at full rated power; internal circuits then limit the power available to modules to 600 W maximum.
Important: Option 760 (Output Disconnect/Polarity Reversal Relays) limits the output current to 10 A maximum on Models N6742B and N6773A, and is not available on Models N6741B, N6751A, N6752A, N6761A, N6762A, and N6781A–N6786A.
Important: Option 2UA (200 µA measurement range) is available only on Models N6761A and N6762A.
Important: Output sequencing synchronization across multiple mainframes is supported on the N6700B, N6701A, and N6702A mainframes; it is not supported on the discontinued N6700A mainframe. Option LGA (large-size FPGA) must be ordered on the N6751A and N6752A modules, as it is required to support output sequencing between multiple mainframes.
Important: N6783A modules cannot be used in series with other N6783A modules or any other N67xx module.
Important: When sinking power, Model N6784A can operate at the maximum rated output power for only a limited amount of time; the unit monitors internal power device temperature and latches the output off if the safe limit is exceeded (annunciated by the OT status bit), requiring a protect clear to resume operation.
Important: The N6791A and N6792A electronic load modules are not supported on the previous mainframes N6700B, N6701A, N6702A, N6705A, and N6705B. Arbitrary waveform generation, scope view, and the related oscilloscope measurement capabilities apply only when modules are installed in an N6705 DC Power Analyzer.
Important: New modules N6753A and N6754A require mainframe firmware version C.02.00 or greater. If you add modules with model numbers N673xA, N673xB, N674xA, N674xB, N6753A, N6754A, or N677xA to an N672xA, you will not be able to access the Agilent 662x command set for any installed modules; only SCPI commands will be accepted.
Important: Performance specifications for the N6780 Series 2-quadrant SMU modules (N6781A, N6782A) are not included in the base datasheet; see the N6780 Series Source/Measure Units (SMUs) for the N6700 Modular Power System Data Sheet, literature number 5990-5829EN. This data sheet does not include a comprehensive list of all power module specifications and characteristics; complete performance specifications and supplemental characteristics for all power modules are in the N6700 Modular Power System Family Specifications Guide, part number N6700-90001.
