The Anritsu MS4640A Series VectorStar is a family of microwave vector network analyzers designed for high-performance broadband network analysis. The series comprises four base models — the MS4642A covering 10 MHz to 20 GHz, the MS4644A to 40 GHz, the MS4645A to 50 GHz, and the MS4647A to 70 GHz — with each instrument operating slightly beyond its nominal upper frequency as documented in the extended operating frequency table. An optional 70 kHz low-end frequency extension (Option 070) brings the lower limit down to 70 kHz, with operation allowed to 40 kHz.

The MS4640A Series supports a wide range of S-parameter and ratio measurements: S11, S21, S22, S12, and any user-defined combination of a1, a2, b1, b2, and reference signals. Measurement domains include frequency domain, power domain, CW draw, and — with Option 002 — time (distance) domain. Frequency sweeps may be linear, CW, or segmented; power sweeps support linear, log, constant power, or constant power slope over frequency. Optional capabilities include Time Domain (Option 002), Receiver Offset for mixer and frequency-translated device measurements (Option 007), Noise Figure (Option 041), Direct Access Loops (Option 051), and the Active Measurements Suite with step attenuators and bias tees (Options 061/062).

ValueTronics International, LLC stocks, tests, and ships microwave instruments from its 20,000 sq ft secure warehouse at 1675 Cambridge Drive in Elgin, Illinois. Pre-owned MS4640A Series VNAs are physically inspected and performance-verified by our technicians before shipping, with the condition grade reflecting measured performance rather than a seller's description. New MS4640A Series instruments and accessories are sold through our authorized Anritsu distribution relationship.

Compare Other Models in This Series

The MS4640A Series VectorStar comprises four microwave VNA models distinguished primarily by upper frequency coverage: the MS4642A reaches 20 GHz, the MS4644A reaches 40 GHz, the MS4645A reaches 50 GHz, and the MS4647A reaches 70 GHz. All four models share the same 10 MHz lower frequency limit in their standard configuration, the same 6U chassis, the same Windows-based veCPU and 10.4-inch touch-screen interface, the same 16-channel/16-trace measurement architecture, and the same remote control interfaces over GPIB, LAN, and USB.

Most optional capabilities — Time Domain (Option 002), Receiver Offset (Option 007), the 70 kHz Low-End Frequency Extension (Option 070), Direct Access Loops (Option 051), the Active Measurements Suite (Options 061/062), and Noise Figure (Option 041) — are available across the family. The MS4647A specifically supports Broadband/Millimeter-Wave connection to the ME7838A system via Options 080 and 081; all four models support banded Millimeter-Wave connection via Options 082 and 083.

Each pre-owned model below is its own dedicated product page with condition-matched pricing. Click through to the specific frequency-coverage variant that fits your application — pricing and availability are listed individually per model.

The most visible difference across the MS4640A Series is upper frequency limit: 20 GHz on the MS4642A, 40 GHz on the MS4644A, 50 GHz on the MS4645A, and 70 GHz on the MS4647A. The MS4642A and MS4644A use K (2.92 mm) test port connectors; the MS4645A and MS4647A use V (1.85 mm) test port connectors. Output default power is +5 dBm on the MS4642A and MS4644A (standard or with options); on the MS4645A and MS4647A it is –3 dBm standard and –10 dBm with Options 051, 061, or 062.

Maximum rated leveled port power varies by model and band — for example, the MS4642A delivers +13 dBm from 2.5 to 20 GHz standard, while the MS4647A delivers –3 dBm at 67–70 GHz standard. System dynamic range and noise floor specifications also differ by band and model; see the comparison table and the detailed specification sections (sections 2, 6, and 7 of the datasheet) for full per-band data.

Model Frequency Range Test Port Connector Max Source Power
MS4644A 10 MHz to 40 GHz K (male) +9 dBm (2.5 to 20 GHz)

Important: Damage input level at the test ports is +27 dBm maximum, 40 VDC maximum. Direct Access Loops are limited to +20 dBm maximum, 0 VDC maximum.Important: Test port cables, calibration kits, AutoCal modules, and verification kits are not included with the base VNA and must be ordered separately. The included accessories with each VNA are the User Documentation CD, Optical USB Mouse, and Power Cord.Important: Specifications do not include effects of any user cables attached to the instrument.Important: All specifications and characteristics apply after 90 minutes of warm-up time with the instrument left in the ON state, over the 25 °C ± 5 °C temperature range. Error-corrected specifications apply over 23 °C ± 3 °C with < 1 °C variation from calibration temperature.Important: Recommended calibration cycle is 12 months.Important: Damage input levels at front panel test ports: +27 dBm maximum, 40 VDC maximum. Damage input levels at Direct Access Loops: +20 dBm maximum, 0 VDC maximum.Important: If the VNA is to be attached to a public-accessible network, best practices recommend a user-installed anti-virus software application.Recommended pairing: the 36585-Series Precision AutoCal modules (K to 40 GHz; V to 70 GHz) provide automated 12-term calibration with corrected characteristics that match or exceed sliding-load SOLT performance on the MS4640A Series.
