This Fluke Calibration selection guide covers a family of industrial temperature readouts and companion reference standard probes used to calibrate common temperature sensors such as PRTs, RTDs, thermistors, and thermocouples. The readout lineup spans handheld field units (1523 single-channel and 1524 two-channel), benchtop precision readouts (1502A and 1504), the 1529 Chub-E4 four-channel thermometer, and the 1586A Super-DAQ Precision Temperature Scanner with up to 40 channels via the DAQ-STAQ Multiplexer. Each readout pairs with a defined set of reference probes whose connector type matches the readout: P-type smart Lemo connectors for the 1523/1524, D-type DIN connectors for the 1502A/1504, and L-type gold-plated mini spade lugs for the 1529 and 1586A.
These instruments are used to calibrate industrial temperature sensors by placing the sensor under test in a stable temperature source — a dry-well, calibration bath, or furnace — and comparing its output to a reference standard probe connected to the readout. The guide identifies typical applications including improving calibration accuracy in baths and dry-wells and comparing against process instrumentation in-situ, such as a thermowell adjacent to a gauge or transmitter. The 1586A specifically supports temperature source control of Fluke Calibration dry-wells, baths, and furnaces to help automate sensor calibration workflows.
ValueTronics International maintains a 20,000 sq ft secure warehouse at 1675 Cambridge Drive in Elgin, Illinois, where the precision temperature instruments described in this guide are stored, inspected, and tested before shipment. Operating since 1992, ValueTronics handles each readout and reference probe through in-house verification procedures, providing a level of accountability that drop-shippers and pass-through brokers cannot match. For precision metrology instruments where measurement uncertainty traces directly to the condition of the equipment delivered, that hands-on inspection step is what separates a known-state instrument from an unknown-state one.
Fluke Calibration is the calibration and metrology division of Fluke Corporation. The Hart Scientific temperature calibration product lines, which include several of the readout and probe families covered in this guide, became part of Fluke Calibration following Fluke's acquisition of Hart Scientific in 2005. Fluke Corporation itself has operated as a subsidiary of Danaher Corporation since 1998, and in 2016 Danaher spun off its test and measurement businesses — including Fluke — into Fortive Corporation, where the company continues to operate today.
The readouts in this family span four distinct form factors and capability tiers. The 1523 and 1524 are handheld battery-powered units intended for field use, with the 1523 providing a single channel and the 1524 providing two channels (one of which may be a thermocouple). The 1502A and 1504 are single-channel benchtop readouts; the 1502A measures PRTs and RTDs, while the 1504 measures thermistors. The 1529 Chub-E4 is a four-channel benchtop readout offered in configurations supporting PRTs, thermistors, and thermocouples in various combinations.
All six readouts in the guide measure PRTs and RTDs. Thermistor measurement is supported on the 1523, 1524, 1504, 1529, and 1586A. Thermocouple measurement is supported on the 1523, 1524, 1529, and 1586A. Connector types differ by model: P-type smart Lemo (1523/1524), D-type DIN (1502A/1504), and L-type gold-plated mini spade lugs (1529/1586A).
Each new model below is its own product page with condition-matched pricing. Configuration, connector type, and channel count vary across the family, so the right model depends on the specific calibration workflow being supported.
The primary differentiators across the family are channel count, portability, and supported sensor types. The 1523 (single channel) and 1524 (two channels) are handheld battery-powered units with 25-reading and 15,000-reading data capacity respectively, with graphing for one channel on the 1523 and two channels on the 1524. The 1502A and 1504 are single-channel benchtop units; the 1502A handles PRTs and RTDs while the 1504 handles thermistors, with neither supporting data logging or graphing. The 1529 supports four channels with 8,000-reading data capacity, automated data logging, and statistical functions including min, max, and average.
System accuracy also varies meaningfully across the family. Paired with a 5628 Secondary Standard PRT at 0 °C, the 1502A/1504 achieves ±0.009 °C, the 1529 achieves ±0.009 °C, the 1586A with DAQ-STAQ achieves ±0.011 °C, and the 1523/1524 achieves ±0.035 °C. The comparison table below summarizes channel count, supported sensor types, and connector compatibility for the readouts in this guide.
