The Agilent Infiniium 54850 Series is a family of four-channel real-time digital oscilloscopes spanning 2 GHz to 6 GHz of analog bandwidth. The datasheet identifies four models in the series: the 54852A (2 GHz), 54853A (2.5 GHz), 54854A (4 GHz), and 54855A (6 GHz). All four models are four-channel instruments built on the same Infiniium platform, with the 54855A serving as the top-of-line bandwidth tier.

According to the datasheet, the 54850 Series targets applications driven by increased clock speeds and edge rates, high-speed serial differential bus design, and dense circuit boards that require probing in hard-to-reach locations. The datasheet's application table lists supported bus standards including Ethernet, USB 2.0, DDR I/II, SATA 1.5 Gbps, SAS 150, DVI, HDMI, Fibre Channel, PCI Express I, ExpressCard, InfiniBand, and Advanced TCA, with recommended bandwidths and corresponding compliance, decode, and jitter analysis software options.

Brand Heritage

The Infiniium 54850 Series was introduced by Agilent Technologies, the test and measurement business spun out of Hewlett-Packard in 1999. In 2014, Agilent's electronic measurement business was transferred to a new entity, Keysight Technologies, which is the current corporate owner of the Infiniium oscilloscope product family. Used instruments bearing the Agilent badge are part of the same engineering lineage as current Keysight-branded products.

Compare Other Models in This Series

The Infiniium 54850 Series consists of four four-channel real-time oscilloscope models that share a common Infiniium platform, user interface, and connectivity feature set. As the datasheet specification tables show, the four models are differentiated primarily by analog bandwidth and, on the 54852A, by maximum sample rate. All four share the same Windows XP Pro operating environment, the same AutoProbe interface, the same 18 GHz BNC-compatible input connector, and the same options for memory upgrade, jitter analysis, and serial data analysis software.

The 54855A sits at the top of the bandwidth ladder at 6 GHz (with the option 008 enhanced bandwidth software enabling 7 GHz typical, per the datasheet). The 54854A is the 4 GHz model, the 54853A is the 2.5 GHz model, and the 54852A is the 2 GHz model. Bandwidth tier is the primary application-driving difference within the family.

Each pre-owned model in the Infiniium 54850 Series is listed on its own product page with condition-matched pricing, installed options, and configuration details specific to the unit on hand. Buyers selecting between models in the series should first confirm the bandwidth required by their application, then review the per-model listing for the installed memory option, jitter and compliance software options, and accessory complement.

Within the family the 54855A is differentiated by its 6 GHz analog bandwidth, 70 ps rise time, and 1.0 ps rms trigger jitter, and by the inclusion of a high-performance calibration cable as standard. The datasheet also lists an option 008 enhanced bandwidth software for the 54855A that increases measurement bandwidth to 7 GHz typical or allows the user to reduce the scope bandwidth to 1 GHz to lower system noise.

Across the family, the key per-model specifications break out as follows in the datasheet: analog bandwidth at 6 GHz (54855A), 4 GHz (54854A), 2.5 GHz (54853A), and 2 GHz (54852A); rise time at 70 ps, 105 ps, 168 ps, and 210 ps respectively; trigger jitter at 1.0, 1.3, 1.7, and 1.8 ps rms respectively; and sample rate at 20 GSa/s on the three higher-bandwidth models versus 10 GSa/s on the 54852A. All four models share the same standard memory of 262 kpts per channel and access the same optional memory upgrade (1 Mpts at full rate, 32 Mpts at 2 GSa/s or slower).

The comparison table that follows this section reflects the per-model specification differences described in the datasheet. Application requirements such as the maximum signal frequency content, required edge rise time, and any compliance test bandwidth recommendation (the datasheet lists recommended bandwidths from 2 GHz to 6 GHz for the listed serial bus standards) should guide which model in the series is appropriate.

Model Bandwidth Channels Sample Rate
54853A 2.5 GHz 4 20 GSa/s
54855A 6 GHz 4 20 GSa/s
54854A 4 GHz 4 20 GSa/s
54852A 2 GHz 4 10 GSa/s

Additional differences in specifications beyond the few shown above are not listed here — see each model's full specifications below.

Important: Maximum input voltage: ±5 V (warranted specification per the 54850 Series datasheet). Confirm the InfiniiMax 1130 Series probe head or other accessory in use matches the signal voltage range for the application; the 1130 Series probe amplifier itself specifies a maximum input of 30 V peak, CAT I.Important: No probes are included with the 54850 Series oscilloscopes. The InfiniiMax 1130 Series probes must be purchased separately.Important: Maximum input voltage is ± 5 V. Exceeding this limit may damage the oscilloscope.Important: Specifications are valid after a 30-minute warm-up period and ±5°C from annual calibration temperature.Recommended pairing: the InfiniiMax 1130 Series probe amplifiers (1134A, 1132A, 1131A, 1130A) and their probe heads are listed in the 54850 Series datasheet as the matched probing system. The datasheet also states no probes are included with the oscilloscope and must be ordered separately.
