The Agilent 54600-Series is a family of bench oscilloscopes designed for engineers working with mixed analog and digital designs. The series spans nine models covering 60 MHz, 100 MHz, 350 MHz, and 500 MHz bandwidth tiers in 2-channel, 4-channel, and 2+16-channel Mixed Signal Oscilloscope (MSO) configurations. The MSO models uniquely combine the detailed signal analysis of an oscilloscope with the multi-channel timing measurements of a logic analyzer, allowing simultaneous observation of up to 18 channels — 2 analog plus 16 digital — on one instrument.
Per the product datasheet, the 54600-Series is targeted at verifying and debugging designs that include A/Ds, D/As, DSPs, and embedded 8- or 16-bit microcontrollers. The MSO configurations specifically address mixed-signal applications where high-speed digital control signals must be correlated with slower analog signals on the same timebase — applications the datasheet identifies including microcontroller and DSP-based designs in industrial, communications, automotive, and consumer products. The 4-channel 54624A is positioned for designs with heavy analog content such as anti-lock brake testing and multi-output power supply monitoring.
Agilent Technologies was spun off from Hewlett-Packard in 1999 as HP's test, measurement, semiconductor, and chemical analysis business. In 2014, Agilent further separated its electronic measurement business into Keysight Technologies, which is the current corporate successor for the test and measurement product lines including the 54600-Series oscilloscope family. Instruments originally branded as Agilent and HP in this product line trace directly to the present Keysight organization for legacy support and calibration continuity.
The 54600-Series comprises nine models organized into two bandwidth tiers. The 54620-Series covers 60 MHz and 100 MHz at 200 MSa/s sample rate with 4 MB MegaZoom memory. The 54640-Series covers 350 MHz and 500 MHz at 2 GSa/s interleaved sample rate (1 GSa/s per channel) with 8 MB MegaZoom memory. Within each bandwidth tier, configurations are available as 2-channel analog, 4-channel analog (54624A only), or 2+16-channel Mixed Signal Oscilloscope (MSO) variants designated with a 'D' suffix.
Per the datasheet, the model selection turns on three application factors: bandwidth required for the signal frequencies under test, channel count needed to observe simultaneous events, and whether digital bus content must be correlated with analog signals (the MSO requirement). The 'A' suffix indicates analog-only models; the 'D' suffix indicates the 2+16-channel MSO configuration. The 54624A is the only 4-channel analog model in the family.
Each pre-owned 54600-Series model listed below is its own dedicated product page with condition-matched pricing. Configurations differ in bandwidth, channel count, sample rate, and memory depth — and the specific 'A' versus 'D' designation determines whether the instrument includes the 16 digital MSO channels. Confirm the model number matches your existing test procedure or fixture before ordering, as legacy ATE systems frequently specify the exact model by name.
The 54642D is the top model in the family — 500 MHz bandwidth, 2 GSa/s interleaved sample rate, 8 MB MegaZoom memory, plus 2 analog channels and 16 digital channels for full mixed-signal capability. Per the datasheet, this configuration is positioned for DSP and high-speed microcontroller designs where simultaneous observation of fast analog signals and multi-bit digital buses is required. The 500 MHz bandwidth provides approximately 700 ps calculated rise time, and the instrument includes 1 ns peak detection at maximum sample rate.
The bandwidth tier is the primary differentiator across the family. The 54621A/D (60 MHz) and 54622A/D (100 MHz) and 54624A (100 MHz, 4-channel) share the 200 MSa/s sample rate, 4 MB memory, 5 ns peak detection, and approximately 3.5 to 5.8 ns calculated rise times of the 54620-Series. The 54641A/D (350 MHz) and 54642A/D (500 MHz) share the 2 GSa/s interleaved sample rate, 8 MB memory, 1 ns peak detection, and faster rise times (700 ps to 1.0 ns) of the 54640-Series. The 54640-Series also adds a selectable 50 Ω input on analog channels not present on the 54620-Series.
Within each bandwidth tier, the 'A' versus 'D' choice determines mixed-signal capability. The MSO ('D') models add 16 digital channels with TTL, CMOS, ECL, or user-definable threshold groupings (Pod 1: D7-D0, Pod 2: D15-D8), threshold accuracy of ±(100 mV + 3% of setting), and 5 ns glitch detection on digital channels. The 4-channel 54624A is unique in offering four simultaneous analog acquisitions at 100 MHz bandwidth without the MSO digital channels — the configuration to select when the application is heavy analog (multi-rail power supply monitoring, anti-lock brake test) rather than mixed-signal embedded debug. See the comparison table for the full specification matrix across all nine models.
