The HP 10544A is a 10 MHz quartz crystal oscillator designed as an extremely stable, compact, and low-power frequency source for both instrument and systems applications. The crystal, oscillator, buffer amplifier, and oven control circuits are all mounted inside a thermally insulated oven, with the crystal itself ruggedly mounted in a cold-welded enclosure. The unit delivers a 1 V rms output at 10 MHz into a 1000-ohm load from an AC-coupled emitter-follower stage.
Per the datasheet, the 10544A is ideally suited for use in communication and navigation systems, synthesizers, time-code generators, counters, and spectrum analyzers. The 10 MHz output frequency provides a convenient starting point that is easily divided or multiplied for downstream stages. The low aging rate of less than 1.5 x 10⁻⁷/year allows manufacturers of communication and test equipment to reduce the frequency of calibration necessary to stay within FCC accuracy requirements.
Hewlett-Packard's test and measurement business was spun off as Agilent Technologies in 1999, and the electronic measurement portion of that business was further separated to form Keysight Technologies in 2014. Frequency reference components originally branded HP — including the 10544A — therefore trace through the same corporate lineage that today operates under the Keysight name.
