The Acterna ONT-50 Optical Network Tester is a four-slot modular mainframe test platform built to address the convergence of DWDM, high-speed SONET/SDH, and Packet over SONET/SDH (PoS) technologies in carrier backbone networks. The system was designed to ease installation of multichannel DWDM systems, mimic and troubleshoot IP traffic conditions, and simplify the provisioning of SONET/SDH Multiservice Provisioning Platforms (MSPPs). Each of the four mainframe slots accepts field-upgradeable modules that operate simultaneously and independently, allowing a single mainframe to combine digital and optical test modules for multi-application and multi-port measurement.
Per the datasheet, the ONT-50 supports complete DWDM testing across optical spectrum analysis, 10 Gbit/s BER testing, Q-factor measurement, and Packet over SONET/SDH analysis. Listed applications include reducing network installation time of DWDM systems, troubleshooting IP traffic conditions over PoS, and provisioning MSPPs. The platform is intended for carrier backbone deployment scenarios in which long-haul fiber networks have moved from single-wavelength to dense WDM systems, and where SONET/SDH line rates have evolved to 10 Gbit/s alongside the growth of IP traffic carried over HDLC/PPP-like framing per RFC 1662.
ValueTronics International, LLC operates a 20,000 sq ft secure warehouse and test facility at 1675 Cambridge Drive in Elgin, Illinois, where instruments such as the ONT-50 are inventoried, inspected, and tested before they ship. Specialized optical network testers — particularly multi-module mainframes with mixed DWDM, BERT, Q-factor, and PoS configurations — benefit from this hands-on inspection model rather than the pass-through approach used by drop-shippers and online brokers who never physically handle the equipment.
Acterna emerged from the late-1990s consolidation of telecommunications test equipment vendors that produced Wavetek, Wandel & Goltermann, and TTC into Acterna LLC. Acterna was later acquired by JDSU in 2005, and JDSU's network and service enablement business was subsequently spun off as Viavi Solutions in 2015, which remains the current corporate home for the legacy Acterna optical network test product lines.
