The Rohde and Schwarz NAP-Z5 is a Directional Power Sensor for the NAP and NRT Power Reflection Meters. These sensors can be operated via the option NRT-B1 on the NRT base unit and allow average power and matching to be measured. As with the NRT sensors, directional couplers with high directivity and rectifying diodes exclusively operating in the square range allow high measurement accuracy independent of the signal waveform.
The two main parameters for specifying the accuracy of a directional power meter are the power measurement uncertainty with matched load and the directivity. The directivity is a measure of the selectivity of the directional coupler between forward and reflected wave and influences the accuracy both of the reflection and the power measurement.
Directivity defines the absolute maximum for the measurable return loss. The return loss of a load featuring good matching can only be measured with low measurement uncertainty if the directivity is sufficiently high, as for example with the Directional Power Sensors NRT-Z and NAP-Z.
High directivity is also required for accurate power measurements on mismatched loads. The use of low-cost instruments may lead to considerable measurement uncertainty, with too high or too low values being indicated depending on the phase of the load reflection coefficient.
