The MS9740A is an optical spectrum analyzer with a 600 nm to 1750 nm wavelength measurement range, built as an all-in-one unit for evaluating active optical devices. It is designed to characterize devices such as SFP, XFP, and SFP+ modules, optical transceivers, and VCSEL and DFB optical sources, presenting evaluation results — center wavelength, level, spectrum, SMSR, and OSNR — together on a single screen. The instrument was developed to reduce the total time from waveform sweeping through analysis to data transfer, cutting that cycle by 80% compared to previous models.
Across its measurement applications, the MS9740A supports LD module testing — measuring center wavelength, optical level, OSNR, SMSR, side-mode peak wavelength and level, and spectrum width by the n dB, RMS, and standard-deviation methods. It evaluates WDM signals across up to 300 channels, calculates EDFA gain and noise figure characteristics, and analyzes optical bandpass filters such as FBG, AWG, OBPF, WSS, and WDM filter devices. It also measures VCSEL spectra, and for optical chip and CAN device evaluation its high-speed sweeping and low connection loss support efficient measurement of multiple devices.
ValueTronics stocks and holds its own test-and-measurement inventory in a 20,000-square-foot secure warehouse at 1675 Cambridge Drive in Elgin, Illinois. Because the equipment is on hand rather than sourced on demand, pre-owned units are inspected and functionally verified in-house before they ship, while new units ship factory-sealed exactly as received. That combination lets engineers source the MS9740A with confidence in both availability and condition.

Important: With the MS9740A-009 Multimode Fiber Interface option installed, some specifications differ from the standard MS9740A model.
Important: When ordering the mainframe, the model name and one optical connector option must be specified (FC: MS9740A-037, ST: MS9740A-038, DIN: MS9740A-039, or SC: MS9740A-040). One free specified optical connector is provided for the optical input port.
Important: A wavelength accuracy of ±20 pm (1520 nm to 1620 nm, without MS9740A-009) is assured only after wavelength calibration using the Light Source for Wavelength Calibration option (MS9740A-002) following automatic optical axis alignment. The MS9740A also supports wavelength calibration with an external light source such as a DFB-LD, but the MS9740A-002 option assures higher accuracy.
Important: If the Windows OS option is not specified, the built-in OS is Windows Embedded Standard 2009 (WES2009); MS9740A-007 provides an OS upgrade to Windows Embedded Standard 7 (WES7).
Important: When the Light Source for Wavelength Calibration option (MS9740A-002) is selected, one additional specified optical connector is supplied free.
Usage tip: combine the MS9740A with the Anritsu BERTWave MP2100B to support spectrum analysis of optical transceiver outputs and WDM signals.
