A digital multimeter measures the three fundamental electrical quantities — voltage, current, and resistance — at the technician's bench or in the field. It is one of the most universal diagnostic instruments in electrical work, used wherever a circuit needs to be verified, troubleshot, or commissioned. The Hioki DT4223 is a handheld True RMS digital multimeter designed for professional electrical and field service work, with safety ratings appropriate for distribution-panel and service-entrance environments.
The DT4223 introduces a non-circuit-breaker-tripping design that addresses a specific hazard scenario in field electrical work: the accidental measurement of a live voltage source while the meter is set to a resistance-measurement range (resistance, continuity, capacitance, or diode). In a conventional multimeter, that mistake routes a low-impedance measurement circuit directly across the voltage source, which can trip upstream circuit breakers or produce arcing at the test point. The DT4223 detects the input condition before switching to the low-impedance resistance circuit, so a mistaken voltage input is held against a high input impedance of 1.5 MΩ or greater — limiting current flow to 1.5 mA or less and preventing the breaker-trip and arcing events.
ValueTronics stocks and supports the Hioki DT4223 from our 20,000 sq ft secure warehouse at 1675 Cambridge Drive in Elgin, Illinois. We are an authorized Hioki distribution partner and have been supplying professional test and measurement instruments since 1992. Every unit ships from our facility — not drop-shipped from a third party — which means we control the condition, the packaging, and the timeline. Our team can answer technical questions about the DT4223's measurement ranges, safety ratings, and accessory compatibility before you order.
Hioki E.E. Corporation is a Japanese precision measurement company founded in 1935 and headquartered in Ueda, Nagano, Japan. The company has operated continuously under the Hioki name and has not been acquired by or merged with another T&M manufacturer.
The DT4223 and DT4224 are two models in the same Hioki handheld digital multimeter family, sharing the non-circuit-breaker-tripping design, the 6000-count display, True RMS measurement, the -10°C to 65°C operating temperature range, the CAT III 600V / CAT IV 300V safety rating, the drop-proof construction, and the auto-hold and red-backlight visual warning functions. They differ in the specific set of measurement parameters and additional functions each model includes.
Both models cover DC voltage from 600.0 mV to 600.0 V, AC voltage from 6.000 V to 600.0 V, resistance from 600.0 Ω to 60.00 MΩ, frequency from 99.99 Hz to 9.999 kHz, and continuity check. The DT4224 adds capacitance measurement (1.000 μF to 10.00 mF) and diode check, while the DT4223 adds voltage detection and AUTO AC/DCV ranging.
Each new model below is its own dedicated product page with condition-matched pricing and the appropriate documentation for that specific configuration. Compare the per-model specifications below to identify the model that fits the measurement parameters your application requires.
The DT4223 is the model in this pair that includes voltage detection and AUTO AC/DCV ranging. It does not include capacitance measurement or diode check. Select the DT4223 when the application requires the voltage detection and automatic AC/DC voltage ranging functions and does not require capacitance or diode measurement at the meter.
The functional difference between the two models is in the measurement parameter set. The DT4224 includes capacitance measurement (1.000 μF to 10.00 mF range) and diode check; the DT4223 does not. Conversely, the DT4223 includes voltage detection and AUTO AC/DCV ranging; the DT4224 does not. All other specifications — display count, DCV basic accuracy, True RMS, safety category, operating temperature range, backlight, and drop-proof construction — are identical between the two models.
Select the DT4223 when voltage detection and AUTO AC/DCV ranging are required and capacitance and diode measurement are not needed. Select the DT4224 when capacitance and diode measurement are needed and voltage detection and AUTO AC/DCV are not required. The comparison table that follows shows the per-model measurement parameters and functions side by side.
