The PSG Family Performance Signal Generator is offered in two series and four models. The PSG-L Series provides CW (continuous wave) output, comprising the E8241A covering 250 kHz to 20 GHz and the E8244A covering 250 kHz to 40 GHz. The PSG-A Series adds analog modulation, comprising the E8251A covering 250 kHz to 20 GHz and the E8254A covering 250 kHz to 40 GHz. All models share a common architecture with 0.01 Hz frequency resolution, a phase offset adjustable in nominal 0.1° increments, and frequency organized across eight bands spanning 250 kHz to 40 GHz.

A signal generator produces a known, controllable test signal used to stimulate a device under test so that its response can be measured. The PSG Family is programmed using SCPI version 1992.0 and will emulate most applicable Agilent 836xxB, 8373xB, and 8340/41B commands, providing general compatibility with ATE systems that include those signal generators. The family is also compatible with Agilent 83550 Series millimeter-wave source modules through the source module interface, which provides bias, flatness correction, and leveling connections.

ValueTronics stocks and holds its own inventory in a 20,000 square foot secure warehouse at 1675 Cambridge Drive in Elgin, Illinois. Every pre-owned unit is inspected and functionally verified in-house before it ships, while new units ship factory-sealed exactly as received from the manufacturer.

Brand Heritage

Hewlett-Packard's test and measurement business was spun out as Agilent Technologies in 1999, and that test and measurement business was later transferred to Keysight Technologies in 2014.

Compare Other Models in This Series

The PSG Family is presented as two series built on a shared performance signal generator platform. The PSG-L Series provides CW-only output, while the PSG-A Series adds analog modulation capability. Within each series, models are distinguished by their maximum frequency, either 250 kHz to 20 GHz or 250 kHz to 40 GHz.

All four models share the same frequency resolution, sweep architecture, programming interfaces, and general environmental ratings, so the choice between them is driven by two decisions: whether analog modulation is required, and what upper frequency limit the application needs.

Each pre-owned model below is its own dedicated product page with condition-matched pricing. Select the specific model that matches your required frequency range and modulation capability to see availability and pricing for that configuration.

The PSG-L Series (E8241A and E8244A) provides CW output only. The PSG-A Series (E8251A and E8254A) adds analog modulation, including AM, FM, ΦM, and pulse modulation, dual internal function generators, an LF output, and the External Input 1, External Input 2, pulse/trigger gate, pulse video out, and pulse sync out connectors that the A Series carries.

Frequency range separates the models within each series: the E8241A and E8251A cover 250 kHz to 20 GHz, while the E8244A and E8254A cover 250 kHz to 40 GHz. The 20 GHz models use a precision APC-3.5 male RF connector (Type-N available with Option 1ED), and the 40 GHz models use a precision 2.4 mm male connector. Refer to the comparison table for the per-model frequency, series, and modulation details.

Model Frequency Range Series Analog Modulation
E8254A 250 kHz to 40 GHz PSG-A AM, FM, ΦM, Pulse
E8241A 250 kHz to 20 GHz PSG-L CW only
E8244A 250 kHz to 40 GHz PSG-L CW only
E8251A 250 kHz to 20 GHz PSG-A AM, FM, ΦM, Pulse

Product Core & Specifications

Important: Recommended calibration cycle: 24 months.
Important: Maximum power specification is warranted from 15 to 35 ºC, and is typical from 0 to 15 ºC. Maximum power over the 35 to 55 ºC range typically degrades less than 2 dB.
Important: CW level accuracy specifications apply over the 15 to 35 ºC temperature range; for instruments with Type-N connectors (Option 1ED), specifications are degraded typically 0.2 dB above 18 GHz.
Important: For improved pulse modulation performance ≤3.2 GHz, special Option HE6 is available; contact your local Agilent representative.
Important: Remote power meter flatness correction is compatible with Agilent Technologies EPM Series (E4418B and E4419B) power meters.
Important: External detector leveling range of –36 dBm to +4 dBm applies when using the Agilent 33330D/E detector.
