The Tektronix MDO4000 Series is a Mixed Domain Oscilloscope — an oscilloscope with a built-in spectrum analyzer that captures time-correlated analog, digital, and RF signals in a single instrument. Each model combines four analog channels, 16 digital channels, and one RF channel, presenting a Time Domain view of the analog and digital channels in the upper half of the display and a Frequency Domain view of the RF input in the lower half. The Frequency Domain view is the spectrum acquired from the RF input, taken from a user-positioned window called Spectrum Time, which can be moved through the acquisition — live or stopped — to see how the RF spectrum changes over time.
The series is built to correlate events in the frequency domain with the time-domain phenomena that caused them. A representative application is tuning a VCO/PLL: probing the control signal that enables the VCO, the PLL voltage, and the SPI bus programming the device, then moving Spectrum Time across the acquisition to watch the oscillator settle to its target frequency. The frequency-vs-time trace makes it straightforward to see frequency hops and characterize how a device switches between frequencies, and the wide capture bandwidth lets a single acquisition capture bursted communications across separate bands — such as a 900 MHz and a 2.4 GHz transmission — at once. The series also supports general debugging across the discover, capture, search, and analyze stages, with application support for serial bus analysis, power supply design, limit and mask testing, and video.
ValueTronics stocks and holds its own inventory in a 20,000 sq ft secure warehouse at 1675 Cambridge Drive in Elgin, Illinois. Every used unit is inspected and functionally verified in-house before it ships, while new units ship factory-sealed exactly as received from the manufacturer. Holding our own stock means the instrument you order is on our shelves and ready to move.
Tektronix was founded in 1946 and has operated under the Tektronix name throughout its history. It was acquired by Danaher Corporation in 2007, and in 2016 it became part of Fortive Corporation when Fortive was spun off from Danaher.
The MDO4000 Series is introduced as the world's first oscilloscope with a built-in spectrum analyzer, letting you use the oscilloscope itself to look at the frequency domain rather than learning a separate spectrum analyzer. Its defining capability is correlating events in the frequency domain with the time-domain phenomena that caused them, showing a Time Domain view of the analog and digital channels alongside a Frequency Domain view of the RF input.
The series is based on the MSO4000B Mixed Signal Oscilloscope Series and carries the same comprehensive debug feature set across the discover, capture, search, and analyze stages. Four models make up the family, differing in analog bandwidth and RF frequency range while sharing four analog channels, 16 digital channels, one RF channel, a 10.4 in. XGA display, and ≥1 GHz of RF capture bandwidth.
Each model in the series links to its own dedicated product page with condition-matched pricing. The pre-owned unit you are viewing reflects the model and configuration shown here; use the comparison below to confirm the analog bandwidth and RF frequency range that match your application before selecting a model.
The four models divide along two axes. Analog bandwidth is either 500 MHz (MDO4054-3 and MDO4054-6) or 1 GHz (MDO4104-3 and MDO4104-6); the 1 GHz models provide a 5 GS/s sample rate and a 350 ps calculated rise time, while the 500 MHz models provide 2.5 GS/s and a 700 ps calculated rise time. RF frequency range is either 50 kHz–3 GHz on the -3 models or 50 kHz–6 GHz on the -6 models.
Some capabilities track the analog-bandwidth tier: high-speed USB serial triggering and analysis is supported only on the MDO4104-3 and MDO4104-6. Shared across all four models are 16 digital channels with MagniVu 60.6 ps timing resolution, a 20M-point record length, ≥1 GHz RF capture bandwidth, and the full mixed-domain display. See the comparison table for the per-model values.
| Model | Analog Bandwidth | RF Frequency Range | Max Sample Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| MDO4104-3 | 1 GHz | 50 kHz - 3 GHz | 5 GS/s |
| MDO4054-3 | 500 MHz | 50 kHz - 3 GHz | 2.5 GS/s |
| MDO4054-6 | 500 MHz | 50 kHz - 6 GHz | 2.5 GS/s |
| MDO4104-6 | 1 GHz | 50 kHz - 6 GHz | 5 GS/s |
