The Agilent 8920A RF Communications Test Set is a full-featured, one-box test set designed to meet the service and repair needs of the RF wireless communications market. The instrument consolidates the functions of more than 20 complete instruments into a single portable, lightweight chassis, providing transmitter and receiver testing capability through a single-keystroke interface.

The 8920A is applied to RF radio service and repair, cellular phone test, and trunked radio test. For cellular phone applications, the call processing interface emulates a base station and automatically establishes and maintains a cellular link with an analog cellular phone. The signaling capability supports tone sequential, digital paging formats including CCITT, POCSAG, and ZVEI, DTMF, trunking, and cellular signaling, making the unit applicable to LTR, EDACS, MPT 1327, AMPS/EAMPS/NAMPS, TACS/ETACS, NMT 450/900, and JTACS/NTACS radio test when configured with the appropriate options.

Brand Heritage

Hewlett-Packard's test and measurement division was spun out as Agilent Technologies in 1999, and Agilent's electronic measurement business was subsequently separated as Keysight Technologies in 2014. The 8920A was originally introduced under Hewlett-Packard branding and continued under Agilent, which is reflected in the cover-page tagline 'Innovating the HP Way' that appears on this datasheet.

Important: Reverse power limits at the RF IN/OUT connector vary by option configuration: the standard unit accepts 60 watts continuous (100 watts for 10 seconds/minute), while Option 007 reduces this to 2.4 watts continuous and Option 008 to 6 watts continuous. Option 016 accepts 100 watts continuous (125 watts for 10 seconds/minute). Confirm the installed option set against the transmitter power level being tested.Important: Options 007 and 008 reduce the maximum continuous input power of the 8920A from 60 watts to 2.4 watts and 6 watts respectively. Option 008 is recommended for applications where the 8920A is used for cellular phone test only.Important: Option 016 can only be ordered on a new instrument at the time of purchase and can only be installed at the factory.Important: Option 103 is retrofittable only for 8920A units with serial prefix numbers of 3501 or greater.Important: Testing frequencies below 30 MHz will require ordering Option 055 (400 kHz to 1 GHz).Important: Manufacturer recommended calibration interval: two years.Recommended pairing: the Agilent 11807A radio test software combined with the 8920A provides a self-contained automated radio test solution. Option-specific 11807A modules cover automated FM, φm, and AM radio test as well as LTR, EDACS, and MPT 1327 trunked radio test.
