The SMT Signal Generator covers the complete range of conventional analog receiver measurements, delivering exceptionally high signal quality for its price category along with outstanding level accuracy. It offers a wide variety of modulation and signal generation modes, customized configuration, and straightforward operation, with all relevant settings shown on a large backlit LCD. Programmable RF, LF, and level sweeps together with correction of external frequency response make it well suited as a source for electromagnetic susceptibility (EMS) measurements.
The SMT is built for receiver and EMS measurements. Its specified frequency range starting at 5 kHz and its programmable level correction make it an ideal EMS signal source, while the optional Multifunction Generator (SM-B6) extends it into stereo measurements on FM sound broadcast transmitters and receivers and into VOR/ILS avionics signal generation. Across these applications the instrument provides any simultaneous combination of AM, FM, phase, and pulse modulation.
ValueTronics stocks and holds its own test-and-measurement inventory in a 20,000 sq ft secure warehouse at 1675 Cambridge Drive in Elgin, Illinois. Every used unit is inspected and functionally verified in-house before it ships, while new units ship factory-sealed exactly as received from the manufacturer. This combination of held inventory and hands-on used-unit verification lets engineers source instruments like the SMT with confidence in both availability and condition.
The SMT Signal Generator is offered as a family of three models that share a common architecture and differ in upper frequency limit: the SMT02 (5 kHz to 1.5 GHz), the SMT03 (5 kHz to 3 GHz), and the SMT06 (5 kHz to 6 GHz). All three deliver the same core capability set — high signal quality, outstanding level accuracy, and a wide range of modulation and sweep modes — across their respective frequency ranges.
Each model targets conventional analog receiver measurements and EMS work, with the same 0.1 Hz frequency resolution, −144 to +13 dBm level range, and simultaneous AM, FM, phase, and pulse modulation. The choice between models is primarily a question of the highest frequency the application requires.
Each SMT model below is its own dedicated product page with condition-matched pricing. Select the pre-owned listing for the model and frequency range your application requires; the specifications described here apply to the model family as a whole.
Beyond upper frequency limit, the models differ in a few specifications tied to that range. Level accuracy for levels above −127 dBm is ±1 dB below 1.5 GHz, widening to ±1.5 dB above 1.5 GHz and ±2 dB above 3 GHz, so the higher-frequency SMT03 and SMT06 carry the wider tolerances at the top of their ranges. The matching pulse modulator option also differs by model — SM-B3 for the SMT02, SM-B8 for the SMT03, and SM-B9 for the SMT06.
Overload protection against externally applied RF power and DC voltage also varies: the SMT02 and SMT03 tolerate up to 50 W / 35 V, while the SMT06 is limited to 1 W / 0 V. The comparison table below summarizes the frequency range, accuracy, and option differences across the three models.
| Model | Frequency Range | Max Output Level | Pulse Modulator Option |
|---|---|---|---|
| SMT06 | 5 kHz to 6 GHz | +13 dBm | SM-B9 |
| SMT02 | 5 kHz to 1.5 GHz | +13 dBm | SM-B3 |
| SMT03 | 5 kHz to 3 GHz | +13 dBm | SM-B8 |
Additional differences in specifications beyond the few shown above are not listed here — see each model's full specifications below.
