The Extech EX500 Series is a family of heavy duty industrial multimeters built for harsh field and plant-floor environments. The series spans five models — the EX503, EX505, EX510, EX520, and EX530 — sharing a common rugged platform while differing in display resolution, accuracy, true RMS capability, current range, and added measurement functions. Every model in the series carries an IP67 waterproof and dust-tight rating, a CAT IV-600V safety rating for industrial applications, and is drop-proof to 6 feet, making the family suitable for the kind of rough handling that field technicians and industrial maintenance teams routinely subject their meters to.
Industrial multimeters in this class are used wherever electrical measurements must be made in the presence of mechanical hazards, moisture, dust, or the risk of being dropped from height. The CAT IV-600V safety rating is the relevant qualifier for measurements made at the origin of low-voltage installations, including service entrances and primary supply lines, while the 1000V input protection across all functions extends the family's working envelope to general industrial distribution. Every model includes diode test, continuity, resistance, frequency, and duty cycle measurement; higher-tier models add temperature, capacitance, true RMS, and expanded current and frequency ranges as printed in the model comparison table.
ValueTronics stores and tests every EX500 Series multimeter in our 20,000 square foot secure warehouse at 1675 Cambridge Drive in Elgin, Illinois. Pre-owned units are inspected by our technicians against the published Extech specifications before shipment, and {{CONDITION}} EX500 Series meters from ValueTronics are documented, photographed, and supported by our team directly — not drop-shipped or passed through. When a customer needs a specific tier of the EX500 Series in a verified working state with known accessories, that depth of in-house process is the difference between a confident purchase and an unverified one.
Extech Instruments was acquired by FLIR Systems in 2007 and operates as part of the FLIR test and measurement portfolio. FLIR itself was acquired by Teledyne Technologies in 2021, bringing the Extech brand into the Teledyne FLIR group. The Extech name has been retained throughout these corporate changes and continues to be used on industrial test and measurement products.
The EX500 Series is structured as a five-model capability ladder built on a single rugged industrial platform. All five models share identical physical dimensions, weight, IP67 waterproof rating, CAT IV-600V safety rating, 1000V input protection, drop-proof construction to 6 feet, diode test, continuity, resistance, and dual-sensitivity frequency functions. The differences between models live in display count, accuracy, true RMS support, current range, capacitance range, temperature support, and frequency coverage.
Understanding the ladder allows the right model to be matched to the right application. Lower-tier models in the EX500 Series are appropriate for general electrical troubleshooting where 4,000-count resolution and averaging-type AC response are sufficient. Higher-tier models add true RMS for accurate measurement of distorted waveforms, finer resolution for precision diagnostic work, expanded current capacity, and temperature measurement for thermal troubleshooting alongside electrical.
Each new EX500 Series model linked below is its own dedicated product page with condition-matched pricing and inventory. The comparison table that follows the model links shows how the five tiers stack up on the specifications that drive the buying decision — display count, accuracy, true RMS, current range, and additional measurement functions.
The five EX500 Series models separate into three capability tiers. The EX503 and EX505 form the entry tier with 4,000-count displays and 0.5% basic accuracy, with the EX505 adding true RMS measurement and Type K temperature measurement over the EX503. The EX510 and EX520 form the mid tier with 6,000-count displays and 0.09% basic accuracy, with the EX520 adding true RMS, temperature, and capacitance measurement over the EX510. The EX530 stands alone as the top tier with a 40,000-count display, 0.06% basic accuracy, true RMS, temperature, expanded capacitance to 40 mF, frequency coverage to 100 MHz, and AC Peak Hold capability.
Current handling also splits along the tiers. The EX503 and EX505 cap at 10A maximum current, while the EX510, EX520, and EX530 extend to 20A. The comparison table below summarizes these distinctions across all five models so that the right tier can be selected directly from the application requirements.
| Model | Display Counts | Basic Accuracy | Max Current |
|---|---|---|---|
| EX530 | 40,000 count | 0.06% | 20A |
| EX503 | 4,000 count | 0.5% | 10A |
| EX505 | 4,000 count | 0.5% | 10A |
| EX510 | 6,000 count | 0.09% | 20A |
Additional differences in specifications beyond the few shown above are not listed here — see each model's full specifications below.
