The Fluke 62 Max is a handheld infrared thermometer designed for non-contact temperature measurement in electrical, mechanical, and HVAC environments. As the printed datasheet describes, the instrument is small in size, IP54 rated for dust and water resistance, and drop-tested to 3 meters — engineered to be handled on the job without special care. The series is offered in two models: the 62 Max covering -30 °C to 500 °C with 10:1 optical resolution, and the 62 Max+ covering -30 °C to 650 °C with 12:1 optical resolution and dual rotating lasers.
The datasheet identifies the instrument's role in detecting potential problems in electrical and mechanical applications, where temperature is often the first indication of a developing fault. Specific applications named on the page include identifying hot spots in electrical panels, finding overheating motors, and assessing HVAC system efficiency. The non-contact measurement format allows readings in hard-to-reach or hazardous areas where contact thermometry is impractical, supporting early detection and correction of abnormal temperatures.
The Fluke 62 Max series consists of two handheld infrared thermometer models — the 62 Max and the 62 Max+ — built on a shared rugged platform. Both share the IP54 dust and water resistance rating, the 3-meter drop-test specification, the 8 to 14 micron spectral response, the 0.10 to 1.00 emissivity range, the 0.1 °C display resolution, and the single AA battery power format.
The two models differ in measurement performance: temperature range, accuracy, response time, optical resolution, and repeatability all step up on the 62 Max+, which also adds dual rotating lasers for measurement-area identification. The comparison table below lays out the printed specifications for each model side by side.

The 62 Max+ extends the upper measurement limit to 650 °C versus 500 °C on the 62 Max — a meaningful difference for applications involving higher-temperature mechanical components, exhaust systems, or industrial process equipment. The 62 Max+ also tightens the basic accuracy from ±1.5% of reading to ±1.0% of reading and improves repeatability from ±0.8% (or <±1.0 °C) to ±0.5% (or <±0.5 °C), making it the choice when measurement confidence at the recorded value matters more.
The 62 Max+ delivers a faster response time at <300 ms to 95% of reading versus <500 ms on the 62 Max, and a 12:1 optical resolution versus 10:1 — allowing the 62 Max+ to measure smaller targets at the same distance, or the same target size at greater distance. The dual rotating lasers on the 62 Max+ bracket the measurement spot between the two laser dots, which is an operator-facing aid the base 62 Max does not include. See the per-model comparison table for the full specification breakdown.
