The Extech 42545 is a handheld high-temperature infrared thermometer that measures surface temperature non-contact from -58 to 1832°F (-50 to 1000°C). The unit uses a built-in laser pointer to identify the target area and reports the measurement on a large backlit display, with adjustable emissivity to compensate for different surface materials.

Per the datasheet, the 42545 is positioned for measuring temperature in hard-to-reach places and for taking measurements at night or in areas with low background light levels, supported by its backlit display. The 50:1 distance-to-target ratio allows the user to measure smaller surface areas at greater standoff distances — for example, a 1-inch target at 50 inches, a 2-inch target at 100 inches, or a 4-inch target at 200 inches.

ValueTronics International stocks and ships the Extech 42545 from our 20,000 sq ft secure warehouse at 1675 Cambridge Drive, Elgin, Illinois. Units are inspected and verified in-house before shipment so that the instrument you receive matches the specifications described — not a pass-through listing from an unverified source. Our team supports both the standard 42545 and the 42545-NIST calibration-traceable configuration directly.

Brand Heritage

Extech Instruments operates as an Extech / FLIR company, having been integrated into FLIR Systems' test and measurement portfolio. FLIR Systems was subsequently acquired by Teledyne Technologies in 2021, placing the Extech brand within the Teledyne FLIR organization while the Extech brand name continues to be maintained for its handheld test instrument line.

Compare Other Models in This Series

The Extech 42545 is offered as a single high-temperature IR thermometer model with two ordering configurations: the base 42545 unit, and the 42545-NIST, which is the same instrument supplied with a calibration certificate traceable to NIST.

The two configurations share identical measurement performance — same temperature range, same accuracy, same 50:1 optics, same alarm and statistical functions. The difference is the included calibration documentation.

Each new configuration below is listed on its own dedicated product page with condition-matched pricing and availability. Select the configuration that matches your documentation requirements — standard for general-purpose use, or NIST-traceable when a calibration certificate is required for your quality system.

The base 42545 covers the full -58 to 1832°F measurement range and includes the laser pointer, adjustable emissivity, MIN/MAX/AVG/DIF readout modes, high/low alarms, hard carrying case, and 9V battery as standard.

The functional difference between 42545 and 42545-NIST is documentation, not measurement capability. Both units are the same instrument; the 42545-NIST adds a calibration certificate with traceability to NIST at the time of shipment.

Buyers in regulated environments — calibration-controlled labs, audited quality systems, or programs that require traceable documentation for handheld instruments — typically specify the 42545-NIST. Buyers using the thermometer for general industrial, automotive, HVAC, or facilities work where formal calibration documentation is not required can select the base 42545.

Model Temperature Range Basic Accuracy Distance to Target Ratio
42545-NIST -58 to 1832°F (-50 to 1000°C) ±2% of rdg +4°F/2°C 50:1
42545 -58 to 1832°F (-50 to 1000°C) ±2% of rdg +4°F/2°C 50:1

Additional differences in specifications beyond the few shown above are not listed here — see each model's full specifications below.
