The HP E3640A Series is a line of single-output, dual-range programmable DC power supplies built around 30 W, 50 W, and 80 W models. These general-purpose programmable supplies are designed to deliver the performance of system power supplies at an affordable price, pairing each output with a dual-range architecture so a single instrument can trade higher voltage for higher current depending on the task at hand.
A programmable DC power supply provides controlled, regulated power to a device under test, letting an engineer set precise voltage and current limits and adjust them by command or by hand. The E3640A Series supports both modes: programming voltage and current over the remote interface, and setting levels directly from the front panel for bench work where the device under test sits in front of the operator.
ValueTronics stocks and holds its own test and measurement inventory in a 20,000 sq ft secure warehouse at 1675 Cambridge Drive in Elgin, Illinois. Every used unit we offer is inspected and functionally verified in-house by qualified technicians before it ships, while new units ship factory-sealed exactly as received from the manufacturer. That combination lets engineers source the right instrument, in the condition they need, from a company that physically holds the equipment it sells.
Hewlett-Packard's test and measurement business was spun out as Agilent Technologies in 1999, and that measurement business was subsequently transferred to Keysight Technologies in 2014. Instruments originally branded Hewlett-Packard are therefore part of the same product lineage now carried under the Keysight name.
This series of single-output dual-range power supplies consists of 30 W, 50 W, and 80 W models that share a common feature set: dual-range output, 0.01% load and line regulation, standard GPIB and RS-232 with SCPI programming, front and rear output terminals, overvoltage protection, and rear-output remote sense.
Every model in the family pairs a vacuum fluorescent display and adjustment knob with the same remote-control architecture, so the difference between models is the available output range rather than the way the supply is operated or programmed.
Each pre-owned model linked below is its own dedicated product page with condition-matched pricing. Select the model whose output ranges fit your application, then choose the listing that matches the condition and price you need.
The models differ primarily in maximum power and in their dual-range voltage/current combinations. The E3640A is a 30 W supply offering 8 V/3 A or 20 V/1.5 A, while the E3641A is also rated 30 W but reaches higher voltage at 35 V/0.8 A or 60 V/0.5 A. The E3642A is a 50 W supply providing 8 V/5 A or 20 V/2.5 A, and the E3644A is an 80 W supply providing 8 V/8 A or 20 V/4 A.
Use the comparison table that follows to match each model's dual output ranges to your required voltage and current. Because each model carries its own range pairings, select on the basis of the specific voltage/current combination your device under test requires rather than power rating alone.
| Model | Output Range 1 | Output Range 2 | Max Power |
|---|---|---|---|
| E3642A | 8 V / 5 A | 20 V / 2.5 A | 50 W |
| E3640A | 8 V / 3 A | 20 V / 1.5 A | 30 W |
| E3641A | 35 V / 0.8 A | 60 V / 0.5 A | 30 W |
| E3644A | 8 V / 8 A | 20 V / 4 A | 80 W |
