The Tektronix DMM4050 and DMM4040 are 6.5 digit bench digital multimeters that pack many different measurement functions and analysis tools into one instrument with high precision and performance. Both models make typical volts, ohms, and amps measurements and add True RMS (AC and AC+DC) measurement, diode and continuity testing, and frequency and period measurement. The DMM4050 additionally offers temperature and capacitance measurements, allowing a single instrument to take the place of a temperature meter, capacitance meter, counter, continuity tester, and a traditional DMM.
These multimeters are intended for validating designs where circuits in embedded systems have become more sophisticated with tighter tolerances, requiring a multitude of different parameters to be measured with a high degree of accuracy. By consolidating temperature, capacitance, counter, continuity, and DMM functions into one versatile instrument, the DMM4050 helps save bench space and cost while covering the range of parameters a demanding design requires.
ValueTronics stocks and holds its own inventory in a 20,000 sq ft secure warehouse at 1675 Cambridge Drive, Elgin, Illinois. Every pre-owned unit is supported by that in-house operation: pre-owned instruments are inspected and functionally verified by our team before they ship, while new units ship factory-sealed exactly as received from the manufacturer.
The Tektronix DMM4050 and DMM4040 are 6.5 digit bench multimeters that share a common platform: volts, ohms, and amps measurement, True RMS (AC and AC+DC), diode and continuity testing, frequency and period measurement, the 2x4 ohms 4-wire technique, a dual display, and the TrendPlot recorder, histogram, and statistics graphical modes. Both carry a three-year warranty and the same RS-232, LAN, GPIB, and front-panel USB connectivity.
The primary distinction within the family is that the DMM4050 adds temperature and capacitance measurement functions, while both models cover the same 100 mV to 1000 V voltage, 100 µA to 10 A current, and 10 Ω to 1 GΩ resistance ranges.
Each model below is its own dedicated product page with pre-owned-matched pricing. Select the model that fits your measurement requirements, then choose the condition and configuration available on that model's page.
The DMM4050 is the function-rich member of the pair, adding temperature measurement (Platinum RT100 RTD, 4-wire technique) and capacitance measurement across 1 nF to 100 mF ranges in addition to the volts, ohms, amps, frequency, period, diode, and continuity functions shared with the DMM4040.
The DMM4050 and DMM4040 differ in two ways shown in the comparison table. First, temperature and capacitance measurement are available on the DMM4050 only. Second, the DMM4050 carries slightly tighter accuracy figures — for example a basic 1-year VDC accuracy of up to 0.0024% versus the DMM4040's specified figures on the corresponding ranges.
All other headline capabilities — 6.5 digit resolution, True RMS AC and AC+DC, the 100 mV to 1000 V / 100 µA to 10 A / 10 Ω to 1 GΩ ranges, frequency and period, diode and continuity, dual display, TrendPlot, histogram, statistics, and the full RS-232/LAN/GPIB/USB interface set — are common to both models. Refer to the comparison table for the per-model values.
| Model | Resolution | Basic VDC Accuracy | Temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| DMM4050 | 6.5 Digit | 0.0024% (1 yr.) | Yes |
| DMM4040 | 6.5 Digit | 0.0035% (1 yr.) | No |

Important: EMC: this meter has shown susceptibility to radiated frequencies greater than 1 V/m from 250 to 450 MHz, and is designed to comply with IEC 61326-1:2000-11 when used with shielded communications cables.
Important: Please specify power plug when ordering (see Power Plug Options).
Important: Temperature (RTD) measurements are available on the DMM4050 only and are based on a Platinum RT100 (DIN IEC 751, 385 type) RTD; specifications do not include probe accuracy, which must be added. The RTD temperature probe (e.g., TP750) is not part of the standard delivery and must be ordered separately.
Important: Test Leads and accessories are not covered by the DMM warranty and Service Offerings. Refer to the datasheet of each Test Lead and accessory model for its unique warranty and calibration terms.
Important: The 400 mA current range is available in software version 2.0 (AC: software version 1.0.700.18) or greater only; 400 mA continuously, 550 mA for 2 minutes on, 1 minute off.
Important: Up to 2 Gigabyte USB memory module storage capacity uses a USB memory module that is available separately.
Recommended pairing: use the Tektronix TP750 100 Ω RTD Temperature Probe with the DMM4050 to perform 4-wire RTD temperature measurements.
