The HP 6002A is a laboratory-type DC power supply that employs an extended range technique to furnish maximum output power over a wide range of voltage and current combinations. As described on the datasheet, the supply provides a full 200 watts of output from 20V/10A up to 50V/4A, with the output completely adjustable through the entire operating range of 0 to 50 volts and 0 to 10 amps via front panel voltage and current controls. The unit is a Constant Voltage / Constant Current (CV/CC) type and is packaged in a System II modular enclosure.

According to the datasheet, the 6002A is intended for general laboratory use where a single supply needs to cover a wide range of voltage and current combinations rather than being restricted to a single rectangular operating locus. Documented operating modes include local front panel control, remote voltage sensing at the load, remote programming by either resistance or voltage source, auto-parallel operation for greater current capacity, auto-series operation for greater voltage capability (up to three units), and auto-tracking operation where two or three supplies share a common negative bus and are simultaneously programmed from a master. With the optional HP-IB Interface (Option 001), output voltage or current can be programmed digitally from a calculator, computer, or other controller.

Brand Heritage

Hewlett-Packard's test and measurement business was spun off as Agilent Technologies in 1999, and Agilent's electronic measurement business was subsequently transferred to Keysight Technologies in 2014. Instruments originally manufactured under the HP brand — including the 6002A — therefore trace through Agilent to Keysight as the current corporate successor for legacy HP T&M product support.

Compare Other Models in This Series

The HP 6002A is documented in this datasheet as a single-model laboratory power supply with one optional configuration: Option 001, which adds an HP-IB Interface for digital control of output voltage or current from a calculator, computer, or other controller. The base unit and the Option 001 unit share the same DC output characteristics — 0 to 50V and 0 to 10A with 200W maximum output power — and the same regulation, PARD, and overvoltage protection specifications.

The Option 001 modification involves the addition of three internal PC boards (A100 Input Board, A200 Digital Board, A300 Analog Board), two mode switches (CV/CC/LOCAL), and an HP-IB connector on the rear panel. Option 001 hardware does not change the supply's output performance — it adds a programming path. The datasheet specifies HP-IB programming speed of approximately 100msec (no load) to 200msec (full load) for output transitions between 0 and 100% or 100% to 0.1% of maximum rated output.

Each pre-owned 6002A configuration shown is its own product page with condition-matched pricing. Select the base 6002A or the HP-IB-equipped Option 001 variant based on whether your application requires digital programming from a controller, then choose the condition tier that matches your quality system and budget requirements.

The functional difference between the base 6002A and the Option 001 variant is the addition of HP-IB digital programming capability. The base unit is controlled exclusively via front panel knobs or rear terminal analog remote programming (resistance or voltage source). The Option 001 unit retains those local and analog control paths and adds HP-IB control through a 24-pin micro-ribbon connector on the rear panel, with a pair of CV/CC/LOCAL mode switches selecting the active control mode.

Programming resolution differs between the supply's two HP-IB programmable ranges (Option 001 only). The datasheet specifies high-range resolution of 50mV (CV) and 10mA (CC) and low-range resolution of 10mV (CV) and 2mA (CC); accuracy is 0.2% plus 25mV or 25mA depending on range and mode. Customers building automated test systems around legacy HP-IB infrastructure should specify Option 001; customers using the supply as a manually controlled bench instrument can use either configuration.

Important: Maximum input voltage rating: ±35 V peak (AC+DC) does not apply to this unit. For the 6002A, the documented DC output isolation is 150Vdc — either output terminal can be grounded, or the output can be floated up to 150 volts above ground.Important: When the power supply is remote programmed with a voltage source, the programming voltage can appear at the output terminals when the AC input power is turned off. Do not contact the output terminals; the front panel meters will not indicate the presence of this voltage.Important: When using remote voltage sensing, it is possible to damage the supply by disconnecting a load lead while the sensing lead is still connected and the supply is energized. If a load lead becomes disconnected, current flows through internal protection diodes A2CR9-CR10, the sensing leads, and the load and may burn out the diodes or connecting track on the PC board.Important: Do not allow programming terminals A4 or A6 to become open-circuited while resistance programming the output current. If they do open, the supply's output current rises to a value that may damage the supply or the load.Important: Disconnect input AC power before changing any rear panel connections and make certain all wires and straps are properly connected and terminal strip screws are securely tightened before reapplying power.Important: Most of the attaching hardware in this unit is non-metric (sometimes called English or inch). The only metric fittings are strap handle screws (Qty. 2), strap handle nut (Qty. 1), and screws attaching side struts to front and rear chassis (Qty. 16).Important: Agilent (formerly Hewlett-Packard) no longer sells or supports this product. Service centers may be able to perform calibration if no repair parts are needed, but no other support from Agilent is available.
