The Agilent 8902A Measuring Receiver is a precision RF measurement instrument that combines the accuracy and resolution of a high-performance power meter with comprehensive modulation analysis. It operates at frequencies from 150 kHz to 1.3 GHz natively, and extends coverage from 50 MHz to 26.5 GHz when paired with the 11793A microwave converter. Power measurement range spans from +30 dBm down to -127 dBm, providing the dynamic range needed across signal generator output verification, transmitter testing, and low-level receiver work.

The 8902A is designed for accurate measurement of AM, FM, and ΦM, including residual and incidental modulation, with a single keystroke. The instrument also functions as a frequency counter, counting RF signals to 26.5 GHz with 10 Hz resolution and long-term frequency stability tied to its internal time base reference. Additional measurement functions include audio frequency counting (20 Hz to 250 kHz), audio RMS level measurement, audio distortion analysis with 400 Hz and 1 kHz fundamentals, and a complete set of audio filters including 25 µs, 50 µs, 75 µs, and 750 µs de-emphasis filters plus 50 Hz, 300 Hz, 3 kHz, 15 kHz, and >20 kHz cutoff filters.

ValueTronics International has stocked, inspected, and supported precision RF measurement equipment for more than three decades. Each pre-owned 8902A passing through our 20,000 sq ft secure facility at 1675 Cambridge Drive in Elgin, Illinois is inspected by our in-house technicians before listing — verifying that primary measurement functions operate, that the modulation calibrator and power reference respond correctly, and that the front panel, GPIB interface, and rear panel I/O are functional. This hands-on evaluation, combined with full condition reporting and our standard 90-day warranty, is what separates a ValueTronics 8902A from an unverified marketplace listing of the same model number.

Brand Heritage

The 8902A was originally introduced by Hewlett-Packard, whose test and measurement business was spun off as Agilent Technologies in 1999 and then transferred to Keysight Technologies in 2014. Instruments bearing the HP, Agilent, or Keysight name on this product family are the same product lineage; calibration support and third-party service continue to be available through the established T&M service ecosystem.

Compare Other Models in This Series

The 8902A Measuring Receiver is supported by a small family of companion accessories that define its measurement envelope: the 11722A sensor module for RF power measurements from 100 kHz to 2.6 GHz, the 11792A sensor module for RF power measurements from 50 MHz to 26.5 GHz, the 11793A microwave converter that extends frequency coverage to 26.5 GHz, and the 11812A verification kit used to verify Option 050 Tuned RF Level accuracy at 30 MHz.

Configuration choices for the 8902A itself focus on time base aging (standard versus Option 002 for 1 × 10⁻⁹/day aging), the optional carrier noise measurement capability (Options 030–037), Option 050 for specified Tuned RF Level accuracy, and Option 003 for an external LO input. Each option targets a specific measurement requirement called out in the datasheet.

Each pre-owned 8902A and companion accessory listed below is its own product page with condition-matched pricing. Review the configuration that matches the frequency range, sensor module, and time base option your application requires.

The base 8902A covers 150 kHz to 1.3 GHz with the 11722A sensor module. Extending coverage above 1.3 GHz requires the 11793A microwave converter plus the 11792A sensor module, as specified on the datasheet.

Frequency coverage is the primary distinction across configurations. The 8902A with 11722A covers 100 kHz to 2.6 GHz for RF power and 150 kHz to 1.3 GHz for tuned measurements; adding the 11793A and 11792A extends tuned RF level, frequency counter, and modulation measurements to 26.5 GHz with the SWR and accuracy specifications shown on the datasheet for each frequency band.

Time base options separate the configurations on long-term stability: standard time base aging of <1 × 10⁻⁶/month versus Option 002 at <1 × 10⁻⁹/day. Option 050 separately specifies Tuned RF Level accuracy to ±(0.015 dB + 0.005 dB/10 dB step), and the 11812A verification kit is used to verify that accuracy at 30 MHz.

Important: Maximum safe DC input level at the RF input is 5 V dc; maximum RF operating level is 7 Vrms (1 Wpeak). Exceeding these limits can damage the receiver front end.Important: The 8902A Measuring Receiver requires a sensor module to perform RF Power and Tuned RF Level measurements. The 11722A Sensor Module (100 kHz to 2.6 GHz) or 11792A Sensor Module (50 MHz to 26.5 GHz) is ordered separately.Important: Operation from 50 MHz to 26.5 GHz requires the 11793A Microwave Converter in addition to the 11792A Sensor Module; these are ordered separately.Important: Specifications are valid after a 30-minute warm-up period of continuous operation. Option 002 high-stability time base aging rate is specified after a 30-day warm-up.Important: For optimum flatness, cables should be terminated with their characteristic impedance.Important: Peak residuals must be accounted for in peak readings.Important: Maximum Safe DC Input Level on the 8902A RF input is 5 V dc.Important: Tuned RF Level accuracy may be affected by residual FM of the source under test. If residual FM peak is >50 Hz measured over a 30-second period in a 3 kHz BW, measurements should be made using the IF average detector (30 kHz BW) via Special Function 4.4.Recommended pairing: for measurements above 1.3 GHz, configure the 8902A with the 11793A microwave converter and 11792A sensor module to extend frequency coverage to 26.5 GHz as described in this datasheet.
