The Agilent 8510C is a vector network analyzer that measures the magnitude, phase, and group delay of two-port networks to characterize their linear behavior. It serves as the signal-processing display unit of a modular system in which the user selects the RF source, S-parameter test set, and calibration accessories to match the measurement application. Broadband coverage extends from 45 MHz to 50 GHz in 2.4 mm coax, from 45 MHz to 110 GHz in 1.0 mm coax, and from 33 GHz to 110 GHz in standard waveguide bands.

Per the datasheet, the 8510C is used for full S-parameter measurement of two-port RF and microwave networks, with optional time domain analysis (Option 010) for displaying a network's response to an impulse or step waveform via inverse Fourier transform. The instrument supports pulse-profile measurements (Option 008), power-domain sweeps at a CW frequency for amplifier 1 dB gain compression characterization, and auxiliary-voltage domain measurements using the rear-panel ±10 V analog output as device stimulus. Configurations documented in the datasheet address coaxial network measurement, millimeter-wave waveguide measurement, pulsed-RF testing, and materials measurement when paired with the 85071B software or 85070B dielectric probe kit.

Brand Heritage

Hewlett-Packard's test and measurement business was spun out as Agilent Technologies in 1999; the electronic measurement portion of Agilent was subsequently transferred to Keysight Technologies in 2014. Instruments such as the 8510C originated under the HP and Agilent banners and are referenced under both names in the installed base and service documentation.

Important: The 8510C requires a compatible RF source, S-parameter test set, and calibration kit to function as a complete network analyzer system. Ramp sweep mode is not available on 8510XF systems, and the 8340, 8341, and 8350 series sources are not compatible with 8510XF configurations.Important: Discontinued Product: Information herein may refer to products/services no longer supported by Agilent. This datasheet is provided for support reference only.Important: The 8510C network analyzer is the central display/processor; a complete measurement system requires the additional purchase of an RF source (e.g., 8360 series synthesized sweeper), an S-parameter test set (e.g., 8514B, 8515A, 8517B), and an appropriate calibration kit. None of these are included with the 8510C base unit.Important: Test port cables and test port adapter sets are sold separately and are required to connect a device under test to the test set's special rugged test port.Important: Specifications describe warranted performance over the temperature range of 23 °C ± 3 °C. Calibration must be performed within the calibration kit's operating temperature (23 °C ± 3 °C). For a calibration to remain fully verifiable, the network analyzer temperature must remain within ±1 °C of the initial measurement calibration temperature.Important: Ramp sweep mode is not available in the 8510XF systems.Important: Pulse profile domain (Option 008) is not available in the 8510XF systems.Important: The 8340, 8341 and 8350 series sources are not compatible with the 8510XF systems.Important: Power domain requires 8360 series sources; sources with firmware revisions prior to 01 Oct 93 require updating.Recommended pairing: combine the 8510C with a compatible S-parameter test set (8514B, 8515A, 8517B, 85110A, 85110L, or 85104A series), a supported synthesized source (8360 series, 8340A/B, 8341A/B, or 8350B with 835xx plug-in for ramp sweep), and a calibration kit matched to the connector type and frequency range of the device under test.
