The Keysight N9029AVxx signal analyzer frequency extension modules, supplied by Virginia Diodes Inc. (VDI) for the Keysight X-Series signal analyzers, expand the measurement range of microwave signal analyzers up into the millimeter frequency range. They combine low conversion loss with excellent noise figure to provide the best possible sensitivity for measuring low-level signals. The series spans eleven waveguide bands, from WR15 at 50 GHz through WR1.0 reaching 1.1 THz, so that the dynamic range, DANL, distortion, phase noise, and measurement-speed performance of the X-Series instruments can be carried up to millimeter and submillimeter frequencies.

The modules serve both established and emerging millimeter wave applications. In standard mode the extender is useful for general spectrum analysis and works best with stable CW or narrowband signals. In wideband downconverter mode, where spectral information is preserved, it is well suited to signals that drift or to wideband communication signals. In both modes conversion loss can be applied to determine RF power, and spurious mixing products can be identified by varying the signal generator frequency slightly to determine the mixing order.

ValueTronics stocks and holds its own inventory in a 20,000 sq ft secure warehouse at 1675 Cambridge Drive in Elgin, Illinois, so the instruments we list are equipment we physically hold rather than source on demand. Every pre-owned order is fulfilled from that facility; pre-owned units are inspected and functionally verified in-house against the original specifications before they ship, while new units ship factory-sealed exactly as received.

## Brand Heritage

This product line carries the heritage of a test-and-measurement business that has been evolving since 1939, tracing its path from Hewlett-Packard to Agilent Technologies and then to Keysight Technologies. The modules themselves are produced for Keysight by Virginia Diodes Inc.

## Compare Other Models in This Series

The N9029AVxx family comprises eleven signal analyzer frequency extension modules, each assigned to a specific rectangular waveguide band — from WR15 (50–75 GHz) and WR12 (60–90 GHz) at the low end through WR2.2, WR1.5, and WR1.0, which reaches 1.1 THz. All models share the same core architecture: low conversion loss, excellent noise figure, a built-in diplexer for single-cable LO/IF routing, and the ability to run in standard spectrum-analyzer-extension mode or as a wideband downconverter.

Each model is identified both by a Keysight model number (e.g., N9029AV03) and a corresponding VDI part number (e.g., WR3.4SAX), and is built to extend the Keysight X-Series signal analyzers into its waveguide band. Selecting a model is primarily a matter of matching the waveguide band to the frequencies you need to measure.

Each model below is its own dedicated product page with condition-matched pricing. Choose the waveguide band you need, then select the pre-owned listing for that specific model to see the price and availability that apply to that configuration.

Within the family, the N9029AV03 covers the WR3.4 band from 220 to 330 GHz (VDI part number WR3.4SAX). It uses a standard-mode LO multiplication factor of 48 with LO input frequencies of 4.6–6.9 GHz, has an intrinsic mixer conversion loss of 14 dB (not including the IF amplifier), and is the module featured operating in standard mode at the front of this overview. Its Option ATN attenuation value is 30 dB, and Option UDC is available.

The models differ chiefly by waveguide band and frequency range, and the supporting characteristics scale with that band: LO multiplication factors, LO input frequencies, intrinsic mixer conversion loss, RF power compression/damage limits, and displayed average noise level all vary per model, as shown in the comparison table. RF power compression/damage limits, for example, range from –20/–10 dBm to –10/0 dBm depending on the model, and DANL ranges from –135 dBm/Hz on the WR1.0 module to –150 dBm/Hz across most of the lower bands.

Option availability also varies across the family. The fixed Option ATN attenuation value differs by model (from 10 dB up to 40 dB, with the WR1.0 unit listed as contact-factory), Option UDC is offered on the listed models, and the band-pass filter (BFx) and horn antenna options are defined only for specific bands. Consult the comparison table for the exact per-model frequency range, multiplication factors, conversion loss, power limits, DANL, and option values.

> **Important:** Option ATN waveguide attenuators are always recommended when attaching an E8257DVxx signal generator frequency extender to an N9029AVxx signal analyzer frequency extender.

> **Important:** The Option ATN fixed waveguide attenuators provide additional input protection from high-level signals that could possibly overload or damage the mixer.

> **Important:** Each N9029AVxx frequency extension module comes standard with an external 9 volt DC power supply.

> **Important:** Amplitude readings are corrected using the conversion loss table stored on the USB memory stick included with each module, which is downloaded into the signal analyzer's memory.

> Recommended pairing: add the matching N9029AHxx horn antenna option (N9029AH05/AH08/AH10/AH12/AH15) to provide free-space coupling to the signal analyzer frequency extender.
