The Agilent N5183A MXG is a microwave analog signal generator that produces continuous-wave and analog-modulated RF signals across the microwave range. The specifications also apply to the N5183AEP MXG analog microwave signal generator express configuration. It uses a 50 Ω output and provides a 10 MHz reference output at ≥ +4 dBm (nominal) for locking other instruments to a common timebase.

An analog signal generator supplies a known, controllable stimulus for testing and characterizing RF and microwave devices and systems. On the N5183A MXG, all modulation types—FM, AM, phase, and pulse modulation—may be enabled simultaneously (with the exception that FM and phase modulation cannot be combined, and two modulation types cannot share the same modulation source), which the instrument supports for simulating signal impairments such as concurrent AM and FM on the output RF.

ValueTronics stocks test and measurement equipment directly from our own 20,000 sq ft secure warehouse at 1675 Cambridge Drive in Elgin, Illinois. Every pre-owned unit is inspected and functionally verified in-house by our technicians before it ships, while new units ship factory-sealed exactly as received from the manufacturer.

## Brand Heritage

The N5183A MXG carries the Agilent Technologies brand. Agilent was spun out of Hewlett-Packard in 1999, and its electronic test and measurement business was later established as Keysight Technologies in 2014.

## Compare Other Models in This Series

The Agilent N5183A MXG microwave analog signal generator is configured through frequency options that set its upper frequency limit, alongside performance-enhancement and accessory options. All configurations share the same 0.01 Hz frequency resolution, 50 Ω architecture, SCPI programmability, and GPIB/LAN/USB interfaces.

Across the family, the same instrument platform supports optional analog modulation (Option UNT), pulse modulation (Option UNU), narrow pulse modulation (Option UNW), the pulse-train generator (Option 320), and instrument security (Option 006), so configurations differ primarily by frequency reach, output power, and which optional capabilities are installed.

Each pre-owned configuration linked below is its own dedicated product page with condition-matched pricing. Review the frequency option and installed options on each page to confirm the configuration matches your application before ordering.

The specifications in this family also apply to the N5183AEP MXG analog microwave signal generator express configuration.

The frequency options define the upper limit: Option 520 reaches 20 GHz, Option 532 reaches 31.8 GHz, and Option 540 reaches 40 GHz, each starting at 100 kHz. Maximum output power and several modulation and switching specifications differ by frequency option and by the high-power Option 1EA, as detailed in the comparison table.

Performance-enhancement options further differentiate units: Option UNZ provides fast frequency switching, Option 1E1 adds the step attenuator and extends minimum output power, and Option 1ER provides a flexible 1–50 MHz reference input. Refer to the comparison table for the specific values associated with each configuration.
